VivaScoop - July 2023

Welcome to Viva Scoop, your monthly rundown on everything Vivacity Technologies.

The summer arrived and we're in full blown heat mode. Unless you live somewhere south of the equator, you've probably been experiencing record temperatures, or worse still forest fires. Clearly alarming events, but I truly have hope for the future given our ability to either reverse the trends, or develop the technology to protect our habitats.

To further illustrate this, Vivacity works with a number of municipalities helping to enhance their smart city platform/strategy. What's so promising is that many of these cities have climate action plans as part of their near term goals. Case and point the City of Kamloops.

Now, on with the show and herewith is Viva Scoop July. I hope you appreciate all the updates and the amazing work the Viva team do!

How LoRaWAN can accelerate Intelligent City initiatives

We’ve been consistently puzzled by the gap between the Intelligent City vision, where services and information are delivered to the community as efficiently and effectively as possible, and the state of smart cities in 2023. This is largely due to siloed technology deployments, which leave significant value on the table as data and devices can’t be easily shared across departments and organizations.

That’s why Vivacity and SilverServers joined forces to explore LoRaWAN IoT networks in more depth, deploying a lab environment to validate the technology and test a variety of IoT devices. Our initial deployment was a major success: the network showed remarkable stability and reliability, and the end result provided a simple and intuitive interface for cities to handle IoT deployments at scale.

All in all, LoRaWAN has shown virtually limitless flexibility, extensibility, and customizability, which helps set it apart from other IoT connectivity standards. From the ground up, this is a solution that can provide network sovereignty, significantly lower connectivity costs, better battery life for sensors, and a silo-free architecture, which creates opportunities for operational effectiveness and collaboration to a degree that we haven’t seen elsewhere in the municipality space.

This is really exciting and we're eager to see how this technology can support various smart city strategies moving forward.

That's a wrap with the District of Logan Lake RFP

We’re extremely proud to announce that Vivacity has concluded our project with the District of Logan Lake. Through this project we were tasked with creating a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a new IT Service Provider, and then helping select a winning proponent.

We're delighted to say the District has selected an excellent partner, IX Solutions, who will be able to support the District long into the future.

In addition, it was great for Vivacity to be on the other side of the table in selecting a proponent. I have no doubt this experience will help us in the future as we respond to future RFPs ourselves. Furthermore, a massive thanks to the District of Logan Lake for putting their trust in Vivacity for this project. Its been great working with their team and helping dive this project forward.

Completing a client migration to OneDrive and SharePoint

As we all know, organizations rely heavily on their document management (DM) systems. An inconsistent DM platform can lead to internal operations being sluggish, insecure, and having reduced functionality. Vivacity has always taken great pride in our expertise in DM implementations internally and also for our clients. This includes both Google WorkSpace with it's collaboration focus, and Microsoft 365 with it's office suite (word, excel etc.).

On this note, Vivacity recently completed the implementation of a DM system for one of our largest clients, encompassing almost 140 user accounts. From comprehensive hands-on training to deploying centralized, secure, and dedicated DM platforms (SharePoint Team sites) for each department within the organization, we are thrilled the client has embraced this solution. The feedback received indicated the remarkable value it has brought to their organization.

The migration to this new platform presented some substantial challenges given the sensitivity and timing involved in such a large-scale company wide project. That being said we're delighted by the outcome of this project and we look forward to the next stage of optimizing the use of OneDrive and SharePoint.

The growing importance of virtual CIO’s in the digital workplace

Every company today has a digital environment that's getting continually more complex. Given this, we encourage every company (even ourselves) to get external support in reviewing potential gaps, or areas for improvement in deploying applications, IT services, and cyber security.

As is traditional, companies usually turn to consultants to analyze their IT environments, but what happens when the consultant delivers their report and now you have to figure out how to implement their recommendations? This can be challenging at the best of times, but even more so when you don’t have the internal skills to deliver technical projects.

This is why Vivacity is shifting towards offering Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) services. We help manage the digital transformation so you can focus on your core business operations. Recently, we released a blog detailing this line of work, which you can check out here. Happy reading!

Help!! Please spread the word on what we do and who we are. Its simple, but massively beneficial for Vivacity. Thank you so much for tuning in and don't hesitate to reach out to the Viva team with any thoughts or questions.
